With a long history, Jiaozhou is one of the origins of Chinese ancient civilization and created the world famous Sanlihe civilization. In Tang and Song Dynasties Jiaozhou was one of the 5 biggest nationwide commercial ports. It was also the only trading port to the north of the Yangtze River .It was habitually entiled “Golden Jiaozhou” for its flourishing commerce and trade.
Jiaozhou is well-known for its brilliant culture, abundant celebrities and rich culture heritages. There are Sanlihe civilization relics which gathered the culture of Dawenkou culture in new Stone Age and Longshan Culture. The folk arts Jiaozhou Yang-ge and Jiaozhou Mao-tune opera are enlisted in the state immaterial culture heritages at one time, and Jiaozhou was granted as the Hometown of Chinese Yang-ge folk dance by Chinese Dancer Association.
