Jiaozhou, obtaining the name from Jiaoshui, is located by Yellow Sea and Jiaozhou Bay. In February 1987, Jiaozhou was authorized by the State coumil to be the first city replacing county in Qingdao and enlisted in the first batch of open coastal cities in Shandong Province. At present, it is in charge of 13 towns, 5 sub-district offices and 811 administrative villages. It has a total land area of 1210 km², 45 km² of which are the urban constructive area. The coastline is 25 km. Jiaozhou possesses a population of 1,100,000 with the recorded population is 790,000 and the urban population is 450,000. It is ranked the 19th in the economic competitive general capacity and scientific development general evaluation among all the state counties and honored with several titles, such as the State Sanitary City, the Model Environment Protection City, State Gardening City and leading City in  Scientific  and technological Work.
