Jiaozhou, obtaining the name from Jiaoshui, is located by Yellow Sea and Jiaozhou Bay. In February 1987, Jiaozhou was authorized by the State coumil to be the first city replacing county in Qingdao and enlisted in the first batch of open coastal cities in Shandong Province.
